Using sign language in the classroom
When you think of sign language in the classroom you will probably think about raising your hand when you have a question or pointing to someone or something. Those examples are known by most people and are being used in the classroom. There are actually a lot more signs you could use and they have benefits.
Using sign language in the classroom is a solution to reach all learners.Sign language can enhance the learning process by bringing visual, auditory and kinesthetic feedback to help reach all students.
Sign language can be used to:
* Manage students behavior.
^ Using easy signs that both the teacher and the students know it becomes much easier to manage the noises and rude behaviour in the classroom. Schools can also make up their own signs for things like 'Can I go to the toilet?' or 'I don't understand'.
* Make students better at spelling.
^ When they learn the basic sign language skills, like the alphabet, it it gives them another way to remember the spelling of the words.
* Builds a better vocabulary.
^ When you can hear the word and see the word spoken it leaves a stronger imprint on the brain.
